Sketching Golden Eagle Migration
Canadian Rocky Mountains
"in all things of nature there is something of the marvelous"
Aristotle.
For me the essence of wildlife art is to portray a certain time, place or feeling. Hopefully the viewer of my work can share these emotions, and thus satisfy my needs as an artist.
My earliest recollections of nature and art were from the Ladybird books "what to look for" series illustrated by Charles Tunnicliffe. Like most young aspiring artists I began by copying the work of artists I saw in books such as Lodge, Thorburn and Seaby. It was my grandfather who pointed out that I should be drawing what I saw. He meant of course that I should be drawing what was directly in front of me and not what I thought I should be seeing.
The complexities of drawing moving subjects that would rather not be on view remain a challenge to this day. It is also a driving force that leads me to some of nature's quiet and often remote places, or maybe just to see what's there in my own back yard.
Welcome to my website, its aim to show some of my earlier and most recent works.
